“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” — Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It Works
Step Twelve as printed in Chapter 5 — the Step the rest of the 1939 book exists to serve.
Read the receipt at the front: “as the result of these steps.” The awakening isn’t a prerequisite — it’s the output. Then the Step splits in two directions: toward the alcoholic who still suffers, and into “all our affairs” — the traffic jam, the kitchen, the job. The program’s final move is to stop being a program and start being how you live. Tomorrow we begin the Promises.
